I went to a party, Mom, I remembered what you
said.
You told me not to drink, Mom, so I drank soda
instead.
I really felt proud inside, Mom, the way you
said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom, even though the
others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom, I know you
are always right.
Now the party is finally ending, Mom, as everyone
is driving out of
sight.
As I got into my car, Mom, I knew I'd get home
in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, so responsible
and sweet.
I started to drive away, Mom, but as I pulled
out into the road,
the other car didn't see me, Mom, and hit me
like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, Mom, I hear the
policeman say,
the other guy is drunk, Mom, and now I'm the
one who will pay.
I'm lying here dying, Mom.. I wish you'd
get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom? My life
just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, Mom, and most of
it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom, I'll die in a short
time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom, I swear I didn't
drink.
It was the others, Mom. The others didn't
think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank and I will die.
Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your
whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now. Pains just
like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, Mom, and I don't
think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying and all he can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, Mom. Tell Daddy
to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom, put "Daddy's Girl"
on my grave
Someone should have told him, Mom, not to drink
and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom, I would still
be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom. I'm
becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom. When I needed
you, you were always there.
I have one last question, Mom, before I say good
bye.
I didn't drink and drive, so why am I the one
to die?
Jenny
(Author Unknown)
Jenny was so happy about the house they
had found.
For once in her life 'twas on the
right side of town.
She unpacked her things with such great
ease.
As she watched her new curtains blow in
the breeze.
How wonderful it was to have her own room.
School would be starting, she'd have friends
over soon.
There'd be sleep-overs, and parties; she
was so happy
It's just the way she wanted her life to
be.
On the first day of school, everything
went great.
She made new friends and even got a date!
She thought, "I want to be popular and
I'm going to be,
Because I just got a date with the star
of the team!"
To be known in this school you had to have
a clout,
And dating this guy would sure help her
out.
There was only one problem stopping her
fate.
Her parents had said she was too young
to date.
"Well, I just won't tell them the entire
truth.
They won't know the difference; what's
there to lose?"
Jenny asked to stay with her friends that
night.
Her parents frowned but said, "All right."
Excited, she got ready for the big event
But as she rushed around like she had no
sense,
She began to feel guilty about all the
lies,
But what's a pizza, a party, and a moonlight
ride?
Well the pizza was good, and the party
was great,
But the moonlight ride would have to wait.
For Jeff was half drunk by this time.
But he kissed her and said that he was
just fine.
Then the room filled with smoke and Jeff
took a puff.
Jenny couldn't believe he was smoking that
stuff.
Now Jeff was ready to ride to the point
But only after he'd smoked another joint.
They jumped in the car for the moonlight
ride,
Not thinking that he was too drunk to drive.
They finally made it to the point at last,
And Jeff started trying to make a pass.
A pass is not what Jenny wanted at all
"Perhaps my parents were right....maybe I am
too young.
Boy, how could I ever be so dumb."
With all of her might, she pushed Jeff
away:
"Please take me home, I don't want to stay."
Jeff cranked up the engine and floored
the gas.
In a matter of seconds they were going
too fast.
As Jeff drove on in a fit of wild anger,
Jenny knew that her life was in danger.
She begged and pleaded for him to slow
down,
But he just got faster as they neared the
town.
"Just let me get home! I'll confess that
I lied.
I really went out for a moonlight ride."
Then all of a sudden, she saw a big flash.
"Oh God, Please help us! We're going to
crash!"
She doesn't remember the force of impact.
Just that everything all of a sudden went
black.
She felt someone remove her from the twisted
rubble,
And heard, "Call an ambulance! These kids
are in trouble!"
Voices she heard...a few words at best.
But she knew there were two cars involved
in the wreck.
Then wondered to herself if Jeff was all right,
And if the people in the other car were alive.
She awoke in the hospital to faces so sad.
"You've been in a wreck and it looks
pretty bad."
These voices echoed inside her head,
As they gently told her that Jeff was dead.
They said "Jenny, we've done all we can
do.
But it looks as if we'll lose you too."
"But the people in the other car!?" Jenny
cried.
"We're sorry, Jenny, they also died."
Jenny prayed, "God, forgive me for what
I've done
I only wanted to have just one night of
fun."
"Tell those people's family, I've made
their lives dim,
And wish I could return their families
to them."
"Tell Mom and Dad I'm sorry I lied,
And that it's my fault so many have died.
Oh, nurse, won't you please tell them that
for me?"
The nurse just stood there, she never agreed.
But took Jenny's hand with tears in her
eyes
And a few moments later Jenny died.
A man asked the nurse,
"Why didn't you do your best
to bid that girl her one last request?"
She looked at the man with eyes oh so sad.
"Because the people in the other car
were her mom and dad."
Beauty Secrets
(author unknown)
For attractive lips,
speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes,
seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure,
share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair,
let a child run her fingers through it once a
day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge
you never walk alone.
Okay, read this poem over once first.....
(author unknown)
The great love that I have for you
is gone, and I find my dislike for you
grows every day. When I see you,
I do not even like your face;
the one thing that I want to do is to
look at other girls/guys. I never wanted to
marry you. Our last conversation
was very boring and has not
made me look forward to seeing you again.
You think only of yourself.
If we were married, I know that I would find
life very difficult, and I would have no
pleasure in living with you. I have a heart
to give, but it is not something that
I want to give to you. No one is more
foolish and selfish than you, and you are not
able to care for me and help me.
I sincerely want you to understand that
I speak the truth. You will do me a favor
if you think this is the end. Do not try
to answer this. Your letters are full of
things that do not interest me. You have no
true love for me. Good-bye!! Believe me,
I do not care for you. Please do not think that
I still love you.
Well now that you have read this poem once,
read it again
but only the odd lines (1,3,5,7....etc.)
A Hug
(author unknown)
There's something in a simple hug
That always warms the heart;
It welcomes us back home
And makes it easier to part.
A hug's a way to share the joy
And sad times we go through,
Or just a way for friends to say
They like you 'cause you're you.
Hugs are meant for anyone
For whom we really care,
From your grandma to your neighbor,
Or a cuddly teddy bear.
A hug is an amazing thing
It's just the perfect way
To show the love we're feeling
But can't find the words to say.
It's funny how a little hug
Makes everyone feel good;
In every place and language,
It's always understood.
And hugs don't need new equipment,
Special batteries or parts
Just open up your arms
And open up your hearts.
Smile
(author unknown)
She smiled at a sorrowful stranger.
The smile seemed to make him feel better.
He remembered past kindnesses of a friend
And wrote him a thank you letter.
The friend was so pleased with the thank you
That he left a large tip after lunch.
The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip,
Bet the whole thing on a hunch.
The next day she picked up her winnings,
And gave part to a man on the street.
The man on the street was grateful;
For two days he'd had nothing to eat.
After he finished his dinner,
He left for his small dingy room.
(He didn't know at that moment
that he might be facing his doom.)
On the way he picked up a shivering puppy
And took him home to get warm.
The puppy was very grateful
To be in out of the storm.
That night the house caught on fire.
The puppy barked the alarm.
He barked till he woke the whole household
And saved everybody from harm.
One of the boys he rescued
Grew up to be President
All this because of a simple smile
That hadn't cost a cent.
A Friend
(author unknown)
If I could catch a rainbow ..
I would do it just for you
And share with you its beauty..
On the days that you are feeling blue
If I could build a mountain..
You could call your very own
A place to find serenity..
A place to be alone
If I could take your troubles..
I would toss them in the sea
But all these things i'm finding are..
Impossible for me
I cannot build a mountain..
Or catch a rainbow fair
But let me be what I know best..
A friend that's always there
Never
(author unknown)
Never say I love you
If you really don't care
Never talk about feelings
If they aren't really there
Never hold my hand
If you are going to break my heart
Never say you are going to
If you don't plan to start
Never look into my eyes
If all you do is lie
Never say hello
If you really mean good bye
If you really mean forever
Then say you will try
Never say forever
Cause forever makes me cry
IS HEAVEN IN THE YELLOW PAGES?
(author unknown)
Mommy went to Heaven, but I need her here today,
My tummy hurts and I fell down, I need her right
away.
Operator can you tell me how to find her in this
book?
Is heaven in the yellow part, I don't know where
to look.
I think my daddy needs her too, at night I hear
him cry.
I hear him call her name sometimes, but I really
don't know why.
Maybe if I call her, she will hurry home to me.
Is Heaven very far away, is it across the sea?
She's been gone a long, long time she needs to
come home now!
I really need to reach her, but I simply don't
know how.
Help me find the number please, is it listed
under "Heaven"?
I can't read these big big words, I am only seven.
I'm sorry operator, I didn't mean to make you
cry,
Is your tummy hurting too, or is there something
in your eye?
If I call my church maybe they will know.
Mommy said when we need help that's where we
should go.
I found the number to my church tacked up on
the wall.
Thank you operator, I'll give them a call.
Friends
(author unknown)
Some people come into our lives and quickly go..
Some people become friends and stay awhile...
leaving beautiful footprints on our hearts...
and we are never quite the same
because we have made a good friend!
A FRIEND IS A TREASURE
(author unknown)
A friend is someone we turn to
When our spirits need a lift,
A friend is someone we treasure
For our friendship is a gift,
A friend is someone who fills our lives
With beauty, joy, and grace
And makes the world we live in
A better and happier place.
Simple vs. Real
(author unknown)
A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from
your tears.
A simple friend doesn't know your parents'
first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers
in his address book.
A simple friend brings a bottle of wine
to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you
cook and stays late to help you clean.
A simple friend hates it when you call
after he has gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so
long to call.
A simple friend seeks to talk with you
about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your
problems.
A simple friend wonders about your romantic
history.
A real friend could blackmail you with
it.
A simple friend, when visiting, acts like
a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator
and helps himself.
A simple friend thinks the friendship is
over when you have an argument.
A real friend knows that it's not a friendship
until after you've had a fight.
A simple friend expects you to always be
there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there
for you!
Friendship
(author unknown)
As we have grown and changed so have our ideas on friendship...
1. In kindergarten your idea of a good friend
was the person who let you have the red crayon when
all that was left was the ugly black one.
2. In first grade your idea of a good friend was
the person who went to the bathroom with you and
held your hand as you walked through the scary
halls.
3. In second grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who helped you stand up to the class
bully.
4. In third grade your idea of a good friend was
the person who shared their lunch with you when
you forgot yours on the bus.
5. In fourth grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who was willing to switch square
dancing partners in gym so you wouldn't have
to be stuck do-si-do-ing with Nasty Nicky or Smelly
Susan.
6. In fifth grade your idea of a friend was the
person who saved a seat on the back of the bus for
you.
7. In sixth grade your idea of a friend was the
person who went up to Nick or Susan, your new
crush, and asked them to dance with you, so that
if they said no you wouldn't have to be
embarrassed.
8. In seventh grade your idea of a friend was
the person who let you copy the social studies
homework from the night before that you had forgotten
about.
9. In eighth grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who helped you pack up your stuffed
animals and old baseball cards so that your room
would be a "high schooler's" room, but didn't laugh
at you when you finished and broke out into tears.
10. In ninth grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who went with you to that "cool" party
thrown by a senior so you wouldn't wind up being
the only freshman there.
11. In tenth grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who changed their schedule so you
would have someone to sit with at lunch.
12. In eleventh grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who gave you rides in their new car,
convinced your parents that you shouldn't be
grounded, consoled you when you broke up with Nick
or Susan, and found you a date to the prom.
13. In twelfth grade your idea of a good friend
was the person who helped you pick out a college,
assured you that you would get into that college,
helped you deal with your parents who were having
a hard time adjusting to the idea of letting
you go...
14. At graduation your idea of a good friend was
the person who was crying on the inside but
managed the biggest smile one could give as they
congratulated you.
15. The summer after twelfth grade your idea of
a good friend was the person who helped you clean
up the bottles from that party, helped you sneak
out of the house when you just couldn't deal with
your parents, assured you that now that you and
Nick or you and Susan were back together, you
could make through anything, helped you pack
up for college and just silently hugged you as you
looked through blurry eyes at 18 years of memories
you were leaving behind, and finally on those last
days of childhood, went out of their way to come
over and send you off with a hug, a lot of
memories, reassurance that you would make it
in college as well as you had these past 18 years, and
most importantly sent you off to college knowing
you were loved.
16. Now, your idea of a good friend is still the
person who gives you the better of the two choices,
hold your hand when you're scared, helps you
fight off those who try to take advantage of you, thinks
of you at times when you are not there, reminds
you of what you have forgotten, helps you put the
past behind you but understands when you need
to hold on to it a little longer, stays with you so that
you have confidence, goes out of their way to
make time for you, helps you clear up your mistakes,
helps you deal with pressure from others, smiles
for you when they are sad, helps you become a
better person, and most importantly loves you!
TO DARE
(author unknown)
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach for another is to risk involvement.
To expose your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd
is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To believe is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken, because the greatest
hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The people who risk nothing, do nothing, have
nothing, are nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they
cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live.
Chained by their attitudes, they are slaves;
they have forfeited their freedom.
Only a person who risks is free.
God saw you getting tired
(author unknown)
God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be;
So he put His arms around you,
And whispered "Come to Me".
With tearful eyes we watched you,
and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating.
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hands to prove to us
He only takes the best.
A Child is Gone
by Holly Harris
A child that once laughed
A boy that did play
A child that was loved has
Been taken away
Although not by choice
He is happier now
We all rejoice
But we just don't know how
When a loved one is dead
We can't help but mourn
We are filled with a dread
And our lives torn
They say "he's with God"
And "he's in a better place"
We can do nothing but sob
As we think of his face
He was only a child
When God took him away
We must part for awhile
But we'll see him someday
A child that once laughed
A boy that did play
A child that was loved has
Been taken away
How do you say Goodbye?
by Stephanie Anne Ferral
How do you say goodbye to a friend that has been
around forever?
How do you hold back the memories and try to
act clever?
How do you put on a smile and laugh like everything
is okay?
How do you look forward to tomorrow and live
through the day?
How do you say goodbye when you don't want to?
How do you face the fact that there is no longer
"you two"?
How do you mend the broken heart has eaten you
up?
How do you keep all the secrets and the fun you've
shared?
How do you keep all the love?
Two Men
by Victoria
Two men shared a prison cell, together for ten
years,
shared cigarettes, news from home, claustrophobic
fears
Endured strenuous exercises daily on the yard,
encouraged one another when it all just seemed
too hard
Convicted on the same day, both for the same
crime,
they were due to be set free at exactly the same
time
They sat together in the dark as their dawn release
drew nigh,
gazing through barred windows at the distant
night-time sky
Each thinking of his seperate path and which
way he would choose,
of all he stood to gain in life, or all that
he could lose
One man still held on to the past, revenge stirred
in his blood,
his vision focussed on the ground and all he
saw was mud
The other man had shed his hate behind the prison
bars,
he looked up at the twinkling sky and all he
saw were stars
Dawn came, the gate was opened, two men walked
into the sun,
one feared his life was finshed, one knew he'd
just begun
You
(author unknown)
A part of you has grown in me,
together forever we shall be,
never apart,
maybe in distance,
but not in heart
IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES
(author unknown)
If I knew it would be the last time
that I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything right.
There will always be another day
to say our "I love you's",
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do's?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget,
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight..
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear,
Take time to say "I'm sorry," "please forgive
me,"
"thank you" or "it's okay".
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.
HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR DASH?
(author unknown)
This was by far the one thing that you guys told
me you
wanted me to include in this weeks "Best of...
"
Newsletters. I received over 100 requests
to publish this
again. It's one of my favorites too.
Enjoy! -Missy
I read of a man who stood to speak
At a funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beggining... to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years. (1934-1998)
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth...
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own
The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters most is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard...
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile...
Remembering that this special dash,
Might only last a little while .
So, when eulogy's being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how we spend our dash?
TEEN YEARS MEDITATION
(author unknown)
Looking in the mirror,
I see to my surprise,
A completely different person
starring deep into my eyes.
The carefree little girl
I saw at 4 and 5
Has now become a young woman
Fighting to survive.
In a world filled with madness
That surrounds me everyday
It's frightening to think
I could be killed for what I say.
Remembering a time so long ago,
Picnics, swing sets, Barbies, and
waterparks
A time when I didn't worry
About others' remarks.
It's scary
That time flies by so fast
What I used to call by present
Has now become my past.
And when I look into the mirror,
What I see looking back at me,
Is the face of an aspiring young
woman
Where the little girl used to be.
